I believe art is at the center of what we do. We are creating a meme. This is to disrupt the current way of thinking, which is denial. Art is the most powerful way to dig this meme in. My personal involvement with art and Culture in OWS has been big for now several months. My paint brush has landed on many signs and puppets. I have been at every major DA since late September-early October. I gave every ounce of my support and received the same support from my fellow Occupiers. Now I face a temporary dilemma. It is called homelessness. I know very well thousands of my comrades embraced this. They occupied this. I am afraid I do not have the same courage. I like a warm bed. Therefore I need to work the job I have recently taken, which is as a bar manager at a brand new restaurant. It is completely monopolizing my time. I am there seven days a week from 3pm to 1am. Soon I will have three days off a week, which will allow me to return to my passion, which is making art for OWS. I am an OWS artist, but I do not want to drain the resources of OWS for my basic necessities. If I need money from OWS it is for paint. So I unfortunately am forced to work. But this is temporarily taking me away from this movement. For my close OWS family whom I have grown to love, I will return with a vengeance. I will return, very strong, very creative and very resourceful. Trust my absence is only for the time being. I love you.
James

Hi James,
I wrote an article titled – Is Occupy Art? It is about memetic innovation.

February the 12th has been passed as an international day of creative action throughout the Occupy movement in Australia. #F12
Please help this spread around the world.
We are the world’s real artists, we work for change not dollars, and we will be spreading the creative virus on February 12th 2012. Stemming from Occupy Melbourne, the home of the ‘tent monsters meme’, this day is all about coming at things from different angles, playing with reality and having some fun in these very serious times. All Occupiers, from all Occupations are encouraged to get creative.
Occupations currently on board for #f12 include: Occupy Melbourne, Occupy Sydney, Occupy Perth, Occupy Adelaide and Occupy Brisbane.

You won’t read about us in the newspaper.
You won’t hear about us on the radio.
We don’t seek any glory.
We don’t wear any uniform.
We come in all shapes and sizes, colours and styles.
Most of us work anonymously.
We are quietly working behind the scenes
in every country and culture of the world.
Cities big and small, mountains and valleys,
in farms and villages, tribes and remote islands.
You could pass by one of us on the street and not even notice.
We go undercover.
We remain behind the scenes.
It is of no concern to us who takes the final credit.
But simply that the work gets done.
Occasionally we spot each other in the street.
We give a quiet nod and continue on our way.
During the day many of us pretend we have normal jobs.
But behind the false storefront at night
is where the real work takes place.
Some call us the ‘Conscious Army.’
We are slowly creating a new world
with the power of our minds and hearts.
We are dropping soft, secret love bombs when no one is looking:
Poems
Music
Photography
Movies
Dance
Social activism

Hi to all… my name is Yoshe Sky (artist name) or Johanna and I am an artist working in the lower east side and upstate. I have made some banners for the DA of OWS and like to make more of them a way of contributing my time and artistic skill. I also have a hard time making ends meet and would love to network to show my art in gallery’s or help other established artist to produce there work etc. If anybody needs help working collaborating on projects etc. please call me… has to be for some bargaining or exchange or money.I am very skilled and accomplished.
I like to be on the call today and see what we artists can do for the movement, great idea. love Yoshe

I am the liason for the Arts and Culture working group in Occupy Fort Lauderdale. We found that the most radical occupiers tended to be more involved in the Arts group. Our goal is to bring the national political discussion to the arts community in Fort Lauderdale and I believe we are doing that. The subject of art and politics is deep and layered. I am doing an upcoming teach-in called “The Art of Co-opting Creativity” followed by Guy Debord’s “Society of the Spectacle”. As artists we are silenced by the machine of capitalist culture. Creativity is only encouraged for the purpose of selling a product. This is a perversion of art and we must re-claim our creativity and in essence our human soul.

I’ve been with the OO movement for quite a while. I’d like to share a user generated data base (ad-free, non profit site) for skill sharing in art and activism. How to projects from the likes of Crimethinc, Billboard Liberation, Yes Men, Center for Tactical Magic, and you. Share your own work too:

Destructables.org is an advertising free Do It Yourself website for projects of protest and creative dissent. The site features user generated step-by-step video and photo/text based instructions for a wide range of dissenting actions, including (but not limited to): art actions, billboard alterations, shop-dropping, protest strategies, knit-bombing, making protest props, interventions, methods of civil disobedience, stencil work, performative actions, and many other forms of public dissent – from the practical and tactical to the creative and illegal. It is a living archive and resource for the art and activist communities.
