May 1st and Food Sovereignty/Justice

FOR WHO: Immigrant Rights organizers, Food Justice organizers, and anyone interested in food Justice.

PURPOSE: Begin strategically building towards mobilizing food justice organizations and addressing the injustices within the food industry. Food justice and the food justice movement invoke in the popular imagination such concepts as fair trade, organic, and urban agriculture. The movement is sometimes perceived as a privileged environmental struggle. Yet food justice, as all of us who are passionate about it know, is inherently about social justice; this is inextricable from its ecological and environmental concerns. Among the issues fundamental to food justice is labor and the immense implications for labor our food system has.

In preparation for May 1st, we seek to draw out the connection between food justice, corporate control of food, and oppressive labor conditions in our local economy; to reinvigorate the blue struggle in what has veered towards being a privileged part of the green movement.
