break-out sessions

1: may day general strike 6

2: interoccupy 6

3: corporate personhood city council resolution 13

suggestions:

Lauren: amendment to overturn citizens united, all diff versions 8

heavy lift, could take ten years, last thing we need is multiple versions. everyone should get behind one

Sam Jueller: hosting hunger strike this week, DC statehood 4

Bruce Wright: intentional communities and local economies as alternatives  6

Anna McRobie: Northern Gateway pipeline, starting hearings today, talk about strategy with other occupies; alberta tar sands to BC coast, through native land, delicate ecosystems in small bay, oil spill waiting to happen to exploit tar sands. 3

Amy Price: G8/NATO 5

Kenneth Logan: Titan Pad resource in london and canada. living document to create save space statements, direct action plans. how to use in further communications. 1

Gina: moving to direct democracy on national level 7

Jacob: occupy gardens, food groups all over the world, coordinating global day of planting food 6—won run-off

Direct Democracy:

Gina: time for a change, we have a representative democracy (republic) established hundreds of years ago because of the situation at the time. now we have global communication, can get to places more easily

info readily available

direct participation more feasible

come into alignment with our current capacity

need to move away from old system. in canada. not representative, trim #s, leader received less than half the vote, trying to get away from hierarchy, everyone has a single vote and voice—happen on community level to start and make it spread

has already started at GA, model of what it is

plus use of technology

can only choose representative with no say over issues, can only select the people. to address the cause, not just the symptoms

e.g. most americans against NDAA, so called representatives have not listened

marching on ottowa 100k building 360k just demanding direct democracy, bringing all occupies together, by Sept 17

A3society.org—talks about direct democracy incl. complaints about it

proposed congressional amendment; movetoamend.org/other-amendments

so difficult to get that many states on board

get behind one thing and push it

wall st. proposal?

would have to completely rewrite constitution

mysafehomeca@gmail.com

FB page: occupy for reform

corporate personhood break-out group:

citizens united amendment:

Lauren Steiner

described different amendments, Sanders

Michael from Ohio—can come from the states, triggers constitutional convention, entirely new bill of rights, media has to provide free airtime to candidates, health care is a right

2/3 of state legislatures have to ratify (article 5 of con)

overdue for an amendment

create wiki page, all occupations interested in pursuing

need more general public behind it

Bill Klein:

direct democracy: combine amendment movement and community movement with this, envisioning occupy as a new institutional form of democracy

May Day:

George:

get unions to buy into May Day

what not to buy?

mortgage or rent strike

what to plan next?

take over abandoned houses (did that last may day?). occupy LA having meeting jan 22 about that

mobilizing students, big actions

theme like direct democracy for may day action

Occupy Gardens with Global Action Day:

Maria Augusto

started planting in various areas, working with other gardening groups, 100 people interested

idea in toronto: action that starts towards end of april/may, incl flash mobs, guerilla gardening, small symbolic food gardens culminating in big march

all occupies do together

FB: occupy gardens for world peas

gardening groups: connected with intentional communities, Transitions, Food not Bombs

logistics: finding tools and seeds, look to friends and family, local seeds companies, freeshare websites

benefits: good opening discussion for other political issues, icebreaker, political action to stay out of dysfunctional food supply, creates offshoots e.g. sustainable living

interest in florida

jacob

start with local gardening organization, getting local community talking about

FB: occupy gardens for world peas

interoccupy announcement:

Tammy: subgroups call planning group, web and tech, outreach

trying to connect occupations, let them know what it is

if interested in participating in interocc

orientation 9PM EST

subj. general call feedback—encourage to give feedback

general conference calls next step in evolution, since GAs you have to actually be there and worry about police, can get everyone in the country, follow along with google doc, better process. enables everyone to participate
