Notes from Jan 4, 2012 teleconferencing of Interoccupy of Southern California

Facilitator:  Joan Donovan (OLA)
Note taker:  Anita Simons (OSD)

Joan told how to participte:
Press #1 – go on stack
Press #2 – Agree
Press #3 – Disagree
Press #4 – Respond to direct question
Press #5 – Point of Process/Order

Joan stated the purpose of the call:   To plan a Meet Up in So Cal and coordinate Direct Actions.

She asked for points for agenda:
Jim and Ray and John: Occupy Southern Cal legal committee
Jared: Coordinate General Strike May 1
Scott: RNC in Aug – be there
John K:  bail (legal), foreclosures, Set days for Direct Action
Nicolai: UC Riverside?
Derrick: find strategic location for GA
Anita and Lief:  Occupy Congress

Joan then asked for suggestions for a SC (southern Cal) meet up and location for about 100 people

Jared asked Why would we have a meet up?
A vote was taken to have a meet up and majority won
Susan (OSD) made point of process: what is purpose
Joan said it was up to occupiers to decide what the meeting was like, but she saw discussions, getting to know each other, and possibly an action

She then called for location suggestions:
Charlie: Escondido Library
Jeff: Jan 14 in Long Beach for MLK parade
Jim: joint action of Gen Strike @ port
Shana: OLB
Scott – different locations for each meet up
John K: OSD for Feb 10-12 during Dem State Caucus
Jared: OLA at Southern Central Farm
Dan: Pasadena (he also mentioned an Occupy in Bishop which is a very small conservative town near Nevada) he supports OLB, or have each occupation volunteer to host a different meet-up
Derrick: OTO – a port action and sign-up voters, people needed to come to support Simi Valley
Sonny: concerned about supporting Dems; suggested OLB and doesn’t prefer Saturday, OLB is planning a Bradley Manning Day could be action, Take a Leap
John K: SD event has nothing to do with supporting any candidate, we are just registering voters
Eileen: Ventura and likes Simi Valley, LA or SD and suggests supporting candidates who support Occupy
Chris: suggested we stick to location suggestions due to lack of time

Joan closed stack to list all the locations suggested and take a reading on locations:
Long Beach & MLK in Jan
San Diego Feb 10-12
South Central Farms
Escondido
LA
She then took a vote on Long Beach first and said that there were 14 in favor

Jeff: made a point of process that closing stack and taking a vote was out of order and suggested his own proposal for Long Beach on Jan 14 @ Harry Bridges Park @ 3pm
Colin: made point of process that facilitator has discretion to close stack to move the meeting along
There was another long discussion on pros and cons of each location and suggestions for combining meet up with an action; also stated that Jan dates should consider that many will be at Occupy Congress (Jan 12 – 20) while others felt we can’t accommodate every event on calendar.

Jared: mentioned this was not going through GA
Others replied that planning a meet up did not have to go thru GA

Joan then made another motion to have first meet up in Long Beach on Jan 14 and asked for a vote to agree and then disagree. She heard concerns from those who disagreed and more discussion on Long Beach and it was stated that the march is 10:30 – 12:30. After listening to disagrees,  motion was then amended to have meet up in Long Beach after the march in park at 1 PM in coordination with an action in support of Occupy Congress.

Joan asked for announcements and some people actually made announcements:
Jan 7 Corazon Pueblo (?), General Strike May 1
Anita wants those who are going to Occupy congress to contact her for meetings with legislators
But several people began making new motions for next meet up. We had already been on an expected hour call for now almost 2 hours, and the meeting was called to an end with further discussion on line for next teleconferencing call prior to Jan 14 meet up.
