Nationwide Protests Against the National Defense Authorization Act

Today Occupy protesters and concerned citizens across the country will gather outside congressional offices from noon to 7 p.m. to protest the National Defense Authorization Act 2012 (H.R. 1540). Protesters are calling upon their congressmen to repeal Section 1021 and 1022 which could lead to the indefinite military detention of Americans without due process. Some protesters are also demanding the recall of all congressmen who voted for this bill. You can find your protest location by clicking on the “House” and “Senate” links below. Occupy Long Beach Protests NDAA, Indefinite Detention of Bradley Manning

Manning, a 23-year-old Army intelligence analyst, is accused of leaking a video [http://huff.to/baDcXy] showing the killing of civilians, including two Reuters journalists, by a US Apache helicopter crew in Iraq. He is also charged with sharing the documents known as the Afghan War Diary, the Iraq War Logs, and embarrassing US diplomatic cables, with the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks. According to bradleymanning.org reports, although Bradley has not yet been tried, he was held in solitary confinement for the first 10 months of his incarceration. During this time he was denied meaningful exercise, social interaction, sunlight, and has occasionally been kept completely naked. These conditions were unique to Bradley and are illegal even under US military law as they amount to extreme pre-trial punishment. Occupy Long Beach sees this Nation Day of Action as a chance to help people make the connection between Bradley Manning, Occupy and the NDAA.  For more information, e-mail .

 

 

“NO WAR ON IRAN” DAY OF ACTION: FEB. 4

No War, No Sanctions, No Intervention, No Assassinations!

Occupied cities across the nation are working on solidarity efforts for this National Day of Action demanding, No War on Iran, No Sanctions, No Intervention, No Assassinations!”  The European Union recently announced a complete embargo of Iranian oil. Taken together with the other economic sanctions imposed by the U.S. and its allies, this is a campaign meant to impose maximum suffering on the people of Iran by destabilizing and destroying the country’s economy.  At the same time, covert action inside the country, including assassinations, sabotage and drone over flights, is intensifying. U.S. military bases surround Iran, while nuclear-armed U.S. aircraft carriers and Trident submarines sit right off its cost. The pretext for this aggression against another country in the strategic Persian Gulf region is that Iran is developing nuclear weapons, an assertion that Iranian leaders have denied. The utter hypocrisy of this charge by the world’s leading nuclear weapons power and its nuclear-armed allies, including Israel, Britain and France, could not be clearer. BANK JUSTICE

Major Lawsuit Filed Against Nation’s Largest Banks

Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman today filed a lawsuit against several of the nation’s largest banks charging that the creation and use of a private national mortgage electronic registry system known as MERS has resulted in a wide range of deceptive and fraudulent foreclosure filings in New York state and federal courts, harming homeowners and undermining the integrity of the judicial foreclosure process. The lawsuit asserts that employees and agents of Bank of America, J.P. Morgan Chase, and Wells Fargo, acting as “MERS certifying officers,” have repeatedly submitted court documents containing false and misleading information that made it appear that the foreclosing party had the authority to bring a case when in fact it may not have. The lawsuit names JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A., Bank of America, N.A., Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., as well as Virginia-based MERSCORP, Inc. and its subsidiary, Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems, Inc. INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SOLIDARITY WITH POLITICAL PRISONERS: FEB. 4

In New Mexico, (un)Occupy Albuquerque will hold a day of events for International Day of Solidarity with Leonard Peltier and Political Prisoners. Peltier is a Native American activist and member of the American Indian Movement (AIM). In 1977 he was convicted and sentenced to two consecutive terms of life imprisonment for first degree murder in the shooting of two FBI agents during a 1975 conflict on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Peltier’s indictment and conviction is the subject of the 1992 documentary Incident at Oglala. Peltier’s murder conviction has survived numerous appeals in various courts and Amnesty International has expressed concern about the fairness of the proceedings. Occupy Oakland Calls Day of Action Against Police Brutality and Arrests

[OccupyOakland.org] – Occupy Oakland has faced heavy police repression since its inception.  From the first police raid on October 25th, when the camp was violently destroyed and people were brutally tear gassed and shot with rubber bullets, to the recent targeted snatchings and arrests of the last couple weeks, and finally to the attack on Occupy Oakland in its attempt to move into a vacant building which manifested itself in tear gas, rubber bullets, assault grenades and the mass arrest of up to 400 people last night, Oakland’s Police Department and City Government have made it clear that they will continue to target and repress those in Occupy Oakland in the attempt to squash the movement that challenges their exploitation, and oppression of the people of Oakland and the 99%. Often those arrested have had their charges dropped after spending several days in jail due to lack of evidence. #OCCUPYWALK: FEB. 11

The 99% will march across America to promote social and economic justice

The Occupy Walk is a National March starting in San Diego, California February 11th. The group will walk across the United States taking a southern route to bypass winter in the first months of the walk. OccupyWalk plans on meeting up with people from other Occupations, groups who plan their own route, and anyone in any town that wants to walk for the cause. “You don’t have to walk the whole way. We hope you’ll walk a block, a mile, across town, a couple days, or even the whole way with us. This walk will help promote the Occupy cause by drawing attention to the injustices that were first presented by the Occupy Wall Street Movement. Judge Denies Preliminary Injunction for Occupy D.C. Protesters
[The BLT: The Blog of Legal Times] –  As expected, U.S. District Judge James Boasberg issued an order this afternoon denying a motion brought by Occupy D.C. protesters for a preliminary injunction barring U.S. Park Police from seizing or destroying tents and other property. Lead counsel for the Occupy D.C. protesters, Jeffrey Light, said earlier this week that he anticipated Boasberg would deny the motion, based on statements made by the U.S. Department of Interior that there were no imminent plans to clear out McPherson Square, and that the government would follow regulations already in place requiring them to give notice of such a decision. The 23-page ruling sides with the bank’s claim of immediate and irreparable harm, and gives the occupation 3 days to remove tents and personal belongings, cease camping, and comply with all BNY/Mellon notices. [OccupyEd.org] – They got bailed out and we got sold out. But through nationally coordinated mass action we can and will turn back the tide of austerity. OccupyEducation is calling on all students, teachers, workers, and parents from all levels of education —pre-K-12 through higher education in public and private institutions— and all Occupy assemblies, labor unions, and organizations of oppressed communities, to mobilize on March 1st, 2012 across the country to tell those in power, “The resources exist for high-quality education for all. If we make the rich and the corporations pay we can reverse the budget cuts, tuition hikes, and attacks on job security, and fully fund public education and social services.” This is a call to work together, but it is up to each school and organization to determine what local and regional actions—such as strikes, walkouts, occupations, marches, etc.—they will take to say no to business as usual.
