A number of conventions we use in the GA were taken from the Quaker tradition.

successes – looking for ways to equalize the systems of oppression created by our society. Internalizing our oppression/privlege…

 

Modification of how to deal with direct responses and points of process – Direct response, POP in the beginning the facilitators would turn to the person immediately. What became apparent the people who would disrupt that process would be people with institutional privilege. It could feel oppressive and aggressive. The process has been modified so that now facilitators will come to speak with POPs. Direct responses were gotten rid of because they were being abused.

 

Progressive stack – people who have not spoken or people from traditionally marginalized voices are put to the front of the speaker list. Facilitate with compassion and not so concerned with process that we lose community. New people will be less aware around the process. Holding space process we’ve created is related to educational privilege. Facilitation is an ongoing dialogue. 2 months anti-oppression training. Awareness of oppression is important. Stressing essential point. Well beyond the left. Young people who may not have considered ideas that have been used to organize on the left. Not going to give the smack down for the people who have not had those frames.

 

Occupy the hood

Affinity groups – group of people who work together if you r not disruptive then anyone can join. closed groups = easier time working together and more accountability

Sarah – powerful to endorse something as a whole body it is important to have consensus. After org left the host city was in shambles. Need to really have relationships with people. year and a half we met. allowed orgs that popped up to come together. The only thing people had to agree to was that they were organizing against the GOP convention. Coming around one shared action united against one action.
