I am a retired educator that has represented the Occupy Colleges thought here in Philadelphia on a very small scale. I suggest that proposing a 21st Century education model is the necessary, progressive counterpoint to protest that Occupy should include in its agenda.
My experience as a real world, hands-on, environmental educator has helped me to understand that we can guide children toward empowered selves by utilizing the relationships between state teaching objectives and nature. Tertiary education, asked to act as it teaches regarding, “learn from history, or repeat it”, is where this global change must originate.

Hi Paul!
I greatly agree with your expressed view! I hope you will take a look at the action/event included in my post, which I do not see here, so will add it, again, below. We are planning to use our action/event (see below) as a template or model if others find they would like to more efficiently recreate what we are hoping to become quite successful in what we are trying to accomplish.
I would like to share a very exciting event that faculty and students everywhere could really get behind and there would be a place on the agenda for student issues and speakers!
The event will take place in the Midwest, so is convenient or ‘only 1/2 a country away’ for anyone and is scheduled for a long, holiday weekend 2/17-19 with the Monday holiday on 2/20 as a ‘stay and ‘Occupy’ longer’ day or a ‘free’ travel day back to campus!
We would like someone to table or represent the student issues and hope to find that group or person and help spread the word here as we plan to ‘Occupy the Colleges’ with that Friday and earlier lead-up efforts on the local campuses in ‘Koch Town’, Wichita, Kansas as we ‘OCCUPY KOCH TOWN!’!!
Join us in Wichita, KS
hometown & headquarters of
KOCH INDUSTRIES, THE KOCH BROTHERS
& Koch funded think tank, the Kansas Policy Institute
Occupy Koch Town
Wichita, Kansas
Move beyond fossil fuels and corporate corruption!
Tell the Koch Brothers
NO KEYSTONE-XL PIPELINE!!
Save the Ogalala Aquifer, our farm and ranchlands in the Heartland—NO KEYSTONE XL PIPELINE!
Let’s take a regional and national stand ‘TOGETHER’ for our environment!
President’s Day Weekend
February 17-18-19, 2012
Direct Action!! Speakers! Music!
More details, schedule of direct actions and speakers, to be announced.
Some camping, inexpensive, free overnight accommodations available.
Occupation/further action welcome. Info/Sign-up at: Occupy Koch Town Facebook Event Page
Occupy Koch Town ‘After’ President Obama’s Announcement of Disapproval on Timeframe for Environmental and National Interest Assessment of TransCanada’s Keystone XL Pipeline!
You did fantastic work, against corruption and an ‘impossibly’ ‘stacked deck’!
Big Oil will do everything it can to overturn the President’s brave decision to say he won’t be pushed into an incomplete decision without adequate environmental assessment AND they’re not used to losing! They’ve used deep pockets to buy Congress and now they’ll use ‘their’ Congress to get ALL their dirty work done–ALL that we don’t stand AND keep standing in their way to prevent!! That’s what we saw with the Keystone XL ‘re-review’. Now we can expect them to do more of the same, and worse!!
We must shore up the President to stand firm and continue his recent efforts on our globally shared and critical climate change and environmental concerns! He is doing what we want him to do to ‘stand up to the 1%’, and is doing it at great political risk because we know that Big Oil will follow through on their threat to exact ‘huge political consequences’ as they said, if Obama did not bend to their wishes! He looks to be remembering his campaign pledge to do something strong on climate change and they will use their weapon, money, and lots of it to lie, distort the facts, and ‘buy and brainwash’ American voters to influence them at the polls!
We are trying to raise up the other 99% all across our great land with a call to ‘Occupy Koch Town’ to expose the shady, sinister, and dirty dealings of one of the primary leaders and head of this corporate 1% hijacking of our democracy, our voice, our freedom!! In their hometown and headquarters, we will confront them and continue to ‘blow the whistle’ on the corruption game that passes for business as usual on Capitol Hill!
Join us in Wichita, Kansas, to ‘OCCUPY KOCH TOWN!’, Presidents’ Day Weekend, February 17-18-19 for ‘Occupy Koch’ with great speakers such as Bill McKibben and Mike Elk, journalist with In These Times; teach-ins; non-violent, no arrests, fun and creative demonstrations and rallies; a grand march with a lot of ‘street theater’; great music; Wichita neighborhood ‘direct actions’ to help educate, register voters, stand up to power, win over ‘the people’ and let freedom ring from the ‘Heartland’!!
We’ll be fighting to prevent K-XL or other pipelines and routes that would allow the game of developing the Tar Sands and other dirty ‘planetary carbon bombs’ to continue at the public’s expense through Corporate welfare subsidies for everything from development to cleanup and listen instead to the scientists who say that to further develop the Tar Sands and other carbon bombs would be ‘game over’ for life, as we know it on the planet!!
‘Occupy Koch Town is an Occupy lead coalition of Midwest Occupations, the Sierra Club and other regional climate and environmental groups, young and old, labor, farm, interfaith, multi-ethnic and many other organizations, groups and segments of the popular movement rising up to focus on climate change, dirty, non-renewable energy, and the related and intertwined issues, along with the corporate 1% and Koch’s connection to these many issues! We be discussing and deciding on a ‘next bold plan of action’ with a ‘Stepping Stone’ plan for this important 2012 year!
As environmentalist Bill McKibben says, ‘spirited people can bring science back to the fore. Blocking one pipeline was never going to stop global warming-but it is a real start, one of the first times in the two-decade fight over climate change when the fossil fuel lobby has actually lost. Rest assured they’ll fight like heck-their world-record profits depend on it. We better fight just as hard, because the world depends on it!’
Don’t be left out!! Get in on the action!! ‘OCCUPY KOCH TOWN!’
Our national event website launches this coming week and you can find out more and connect up today on our Facebook Event Page
