The following was adopted by the General Assembly of Occupy Los Angeles. We call upon all Occupys to do the same.
Occupy Los Angeles Rejects the National Defense Authorization Act
Occupy Los Angeles demands that President Obama veto the National Defense Authorization Act. The legislation includes provisions which destroy the Constitutional rights of Habeas Corpus and Due Process. American citizens and all people everywhere have the inalienable right to contest their imprisonment and to a civilian trial by jury. We reject this and all legislation which abridges these rights as well as the false belief that doing so will make the nation more secure.
The bill also contains sanctions against the oil industry and monetary systems of Iran which are clear precursors to a military attack. Additionally, the bill funds wars that the majority of Americans oppose. These endless, senseless wars only serve the Corporatist interests of the 1% and we oppose this and all legislation which enables and perpetuates them.
========================================================================
HOW:
Issue a demand that President Obama veto the bill with a statement of our reasons.
Once adopted, it should be immediately disseminated to all news media.
We should disseminate this to all other Occupys and ask them to follow suit.
We should blow up a copy of the Demand and have the General Assembly sign it.
VIEW THE DEMAND HERE
We should then Federal Express the signed Demand to President Obama at the White House
WHY:
The bill is a direct attack on our movement as it will be used to silence dissenters. It is also our moral responsibility to speak out promptly on such issues of grave national importance to influence and participate in the national debate. We also need to let the public and the media know that we will be taking a clear stand on such matters going forward.

The NDAA only goes to further stifle our Constitutional Rights without the approval of the Americans, just as the Patriot Act was adopted WITHOUT public approval or vote just weeks after the events of 9/11. A mere 3 criminal charges of terrorism a year are attributed to this act, which is mainly used for no-knock raids leading to drug-related arrests without proper cause for search and seizure. The laws are simply a means to spy on our own citizens and to detain and torture dissidents without trial or a right to council. You can read much more about living in this Orwellian society of fear and see my visual response to these measures on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/09/living-in-society-of-fear-ten-years.html
